Our Design Process

Defining
We did background research and interviews after we identified the probolem, in order to understand the problem better. We also made personas and customer profile to empahtize with the users. Then we reframed the problem and came up with a HMW statement.

Ideation 1
We practiced divergent thinking through activities like abstract laddering and clustering.

Ideation 2
After we generated a lot of ideas, we made a creative matrix in order to categorize our ideas and located the enablers. We also used the matrix to come up with previously uncovered ideas.

We made a sketch to sort out our ideas and refine our concept.

We created an ecological storyboard and an interaction storyboard to further illustrate our concept.

Prototyping 1
After we converged to an idea, we created a prototype using cardboard, in order to demonstrate our idea and to fill in the gaps of our understanding.

We refined our previous prototype by adding clearer compartments and doors. We also made a 3D model and are planning to print it using 3D printing.

We decided to make a CAD file while improving our concept. This file clarifies the features and functions of the prototype.

Prototyping 4
For our final prototype, we decided to use laser cutter and create a prototype using plywood. We will also incorporate sensors and motors into our prototype. Here's what we got so far.

Prototyping 5
Our final prototype includes a motor sensor, an infrared sensor, and an acrylic cover. Our prototype is fully functional. When you put a needle into the device, the infrared sensor will detect it and will trigger the motor sensor to release a clean needle.
